CEF Presents Virtual Event Highlighting Engineers Fighting COVID-19

On January 27, 2021, Chicago Engineers’ Foundation presented the next Engineering Spotlight virtual event. These discussions highlight industry experts facilitating virtual discussions, focused on trending topics relevant to engineering professionals, students, and the community.

Event Topic:

On March 16, 2020, a team of engineers, medical professionals, and manufacturing experts joined an Apollo 13-style project to create an emergency ventilating device to support the surging number of COVID-19 patients in need of critical care support.  A week later, the Illinois RapidVent prototype was developed and to date the low-cost ventilators have run for more than 1.5 million breathing cycles. It is a design that has been licensed by more than 60 external organizations as the fight continues against COVID-19.

Professional Expertise

Dr. Gregory Elliot is an aerospace engineering professor, lab director, and member of the Illinois RapidVent team. Dr. Elliot’s research interests include experimental thermal and fluid sciences including aerodynamics, supersonic and subsonic flows, turbulence, combustion, and plasma interactions with an emphasis on the development and application of optical and laser based diagnostics. Dr. Elliot holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, from The Ohio State University.
